‘Classic Country – 1’
Rhythm Tracks CD & Chart Book
Here's 18 rhythm
tracks for some of the most requested and classic country songs of the
past. I use these tracks myself for working up solos as well as for helping my
students as a practice aid.
Created using the excellent and quite realistic
computer-generated sounds of Band In A Box v.11, the
tracks sound almost like live musicians performed them. Each song is between
3 1/2 and 4 1/2 minutes long, so there's plenty of playing time here. Most
songs have 4-bar or 8-bar intros as well as multiple choruses of the songs.
Most of the songs are in the original keys as performed by the artists who
recorded them.
The tracks are suitable for instrumentalists AND singers,
and can be used for performances as well as practice.
The CD contains over 74 minutes of music, and theres a 20 page book with chord charts/song map for
each song, so that the music can be easily followed, and arrangements worked
up.
The songs included in this package are:
1. Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain – E
2. The Bottle Let Me Down -D
3. Crazy Arms – F
4. Faded Love – D
5. Four Walls – C

‘Essential Bandstand Solos’
Rides you need to play in Texas
15 Arrangements for E9th Tuning
When
I was teaching privately, many players would come to me and ask for an
appropriate lead for a particular song, since they played in bands... formal
and informal... that required them to come up with a
intro, turnaround, or 16 bar solo.
To address these requests, this new course is the first in a series called
Essential Bandstand Solos.
This
initial book/CD set contains 15 solos/turnarounds to some of the most popular
traditional country tunes played here in Texas. Rather than presenting the
entire song with verse, chorus, etc., these arrangements are for the most part
16-bar solos as would be played onstage in a band situation, some with intros
and tags.
Like my other courses, the CD contains me playing the solo to a rhythm track,
followed by the rhythm track itself for the player to practice with.
All
recordings and tabs are for E9, and geared for the experienced beginner to
intermediate player.
Some
of the solos are my own melodic interpretations, while others are very close to
those found on the original hit recordings. There's shuffles, ballads,
swing-style songs, etc. I think y'all will find it useful.
The
songs included are (click links for MP3 song samples):
All My Exes Live In Texas - A
The Bottle Let Me Down intro - D
Anybody Going To San Antone - G
Drinking Champagne - A
Fraulein - F
Heart Over Mind - G
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - E
I Love You Because - C
It’s Such A Pretty World Today - D
Mansion On The Hill - C
Pick Me Up On Your Way Down - F
Silver Wings - E
Truck Driving Man - G
Swinging Doors intro/solo - G
Walking After Midnight – Bb
Tab Book w/CD $28.00
‘Hank Williams Classics’
Rhythm Tracks & Chart Book
Like my other tracks/CD packages
below, this set focuses on chord progressions that follow 17 of Hank
Williams' most popular tunes and includes a CD of tracks featuring piano,
bass, guitar, and drums with an accompanying book of chord charts for each
progression.
Now you can work up the solos and arrangements for these
great songs. The tracks are in the original keys and tempos of the Hank
Williams tunes, but are around 4 minutes in length, since most of Hank's
recordings were about 2:30 long.
Song progressions included fit these songs and keys:
1. Banks of the Old Pontchartrain -
A
2. Cold Cold
Heart - D
3. Half As Much - D
4. Hey Good Lookin' - C
5. I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You - E
6. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - E
7. Jambalaya - C
8. Mansion On The Hill - A
9. May You Never Be Alone Like Me - E
10.

13. They'll Never Take Her Love From
Me - G
14. Wedding Bells - E
15. Window Shopping - C
16. You Win Again - E
17. Your Cheating Heart - C

Shuffles,
Ballads, and Waltzes
10 solo arrangements for E9th tuning, Basic 3 pedal / 3 knee lever setup.
It seems
that folks like my E9 stuff so here's a collection of ten tabbed out arrangements
of some classic country standards, with a CD of me playing the solo to a rhythm
track, followed by the track without steel. So the student can play the solo
himself, of course!
The pedal
setup required is a regular E9th tuning with 3 pedals and 3 knee levers (E
lowers, E raises, and D# lower), that are the basic levers in any E9th tuning.
There are 3 "Texas shuffles" in the Ray Price/Johnny Bush
style, 5 ballads in slower tempos, and 2 waltzes that everyone in country music
has had to play dozens of times in their bandstand work.
I've tried to stay pretty traditional to the melodies of these tunes,
what I call the "Jimmy Day" approach. Some of the ballads are
reminiscent of Jimmy's Steel And Strings album. The
shuffles are played like you'd have to play them on a Texas dancehall
bandstand. The arrangements contain lots of licks, intros, turnarounds, etc.
that can be applied to any number of country songs.
The songs included are:
Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain - E
Crazy Arms - F
Heartaches By The Numbers - Bb
She Thinks I Still Care - C
Making Believe - F
I've Got A New Heartache - A
I Love You So Much It Hurts Me - F
Waltz Across Texas - A
We Could- E
Westphalia Waltz - G
The tab book is 24 pages in length,
the CD about 40 minutes long.
Tab Book & CD $28.00
‘Strictly Country – 1’
Rhythm Tracks CD
& Chart Book
Like the title suggests, this
CD/Charts package with play-along tracks is “strictly country” and features
chord progressions fitting 16 of the most played and favorite country songs of
all time. Included are some of the best standards from the history of country
music; two-steps and Texas shuffles, songs from the repertoire of Merle
Haggard, Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Webb Pierce, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, and
more.
As in my other tracks packages, the songs are again in the
common keys of the most famous recordings, and at tempos that are appropriate
for the song. Each song is between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 minutes in length and the CD
contains over 70 minutes of music. Most songs have 4-bar or 8-bar
intros, as well as “tags” to take the song out, as is common on the
bandstand. Once again, there's plenty of time to jam, practice, work up solos,
etc. As usual, there's a 20 page book included with the chord progressions and
song map for each song, in large, easy-to-read type. Here‘s another chance to
work up your favorite solos or come up with arrangements of your own, and you
don‘t have to have a band to do it, since your band is right in your CD player!

‘Swinging
On E9th’
Many steel
players find themselves in a musical situation that requires a more “C6th” or
Western Swing sound and they don’t have the benefit of a C6 neck on their guitars.
Many straight-ahead country bands, though their music basically calls for the
E9th country sound, will occasionally need a “retro”,
or western-style sound from their steel guitarist. With a slight change in
string grips and chord approach, the E9th tuning can be employed in this manner
and give an excellent western swing sound. In fact, the E13th tuning, from
which the E9th was developed, was a very popular tuning for western music. This
course is a collection of steel guitar solos for a dozen popular songs played
by western swing dance bands today. The arrangements are designed to provide
the player with a selection of chords, licks, and melody positions in a variety
of keys that are applicable to other songs as well as those written out.

‘Swinging Standards 1’
Rhythm Tracks CD & Chart Book
Like the Classic Country Rhythm
Tracks 1 and the Western Swing Classics packages, here's a CD/Charts package
with play-along tracks to chord progressions fitting 17 of the most played and
favorite “swing-style” songs many country musicians like to play and bands
enjoy performing. These tunes are a great “change of pace” for the audience
when the majority of your material might be “straight-ahead” country.
The songs are again in the common keys of the most famous
recordings, and at tempos that are appropriate for the song. Each song is
between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 minutes in length and the CD contains over 70 minutes
of music. So there's plenty of time to jam, practice, work up solos, etc.
As usual, there's a 20 page book included with the chord progressions and song
map for each song, in large, easy-to-read type. And as with the Western Swing
Classics package, you don't have to be a C6 player to use these tracks... just

instrument you choose.

‘Texas Dance Time’
~C6th Tab Book w/CD ~
I've prepared a 50 page book
containing, in easily understandable tablature form, all the steel guitar
heads and solos I played on the Texas Dance Time! album.
Also included is an explanation of the tablature symbols, a chart of my pedal
setup, and examples of how I use each of the C6th pedal changes. I try
to take the mystery out of what many steel players feel are very unfamiliar
chord changes presented by the C6th tuning.
This book could easily be considered a course in Western
Swing steel guitar, my approach to the C6th tuning. It would be an excellent
complement to one of the Rhythm Tracks packages listed above.
The complete package contains the Rhythm Tracks CD,
a booklet of each song's chord progressions and song map, and the Tablature
Book with all the steel guitar heads and solos enabling you to play along
with the practice tracks, or take the arrangements to your own band.
-Johnson Rag - D
-Perdido - Bb
-Boot Heel Drag - A
-Rose Room - G
-Skater's Waltz - A
-'Deed I Do - F

‘Western Swing Classics – 1’
Rhythm Tracks CD
& Chart Book
Like the Classic Country Rhythm
Tracks 1 package listed below, here's a CD/Charts package with play-along
tracks to chord progressions fitting some of the most played and favorite
Western Swing songs of all time. The tracks were created using Band In A Box v.12, the newest and best sounding version,
utilizing the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas VSC3 module, featuring very realistic
sounds and endings.
The songs are in the original keys of the most famous
recordings, at basically the same tempos as well. Each song is between 3 1/2
and 4 1/2 minutes in length and the CD contains over 75 minutes of music.
So there's plenty of time to jam, practice, work up solos, etc.
Again, there's a 20 page book included with the chord
progressions and song map for each song, in large, easy-to-read type.
You don't have to be a C6 player to use these tracks...
just use them to figure out your solos on the E9 neck, or play lap steel, lead
guitar, dobro or fiddle. Or even sing over them... or
all the above!
The progressions fit these songs and keys:
1. Maiden's Prayer - A
